Karl Paulsen is the chief technology officer for Diversified, where he provides company-wide emerging technology advising and strategic planning focused on advanced broadcast technologies and digital media systems. He directs Diversified’s consulting and technology-driven broadcast engineering services with a focus on long term planning, workflow analysis, media asset management, and storage technologies.

Paulsen is a life fellow of the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers (SMPTE) and participates in the SMPTE Standards Development processes for the ST 2110 IP-standards. He also served as past co-chair of TC 34CS (Media Systems Control and Services) and secretary of TC-31FS30 (AXF). Paulsen is an SBE Life Member, SBE Certified professional broadcast engineer, and a member of the VSF, AES, and IEEE.

Paulsen’s experience includes serving as CTO, VP, and director of engineering for leading systems integration firms in the U.S. and Canada. As its corporate DoE and chief engineer, he engineered the facilities and launched KTZZ-TV Channel 22, Seattle in 1985; later becoming VP of engineering for CGI/VXF firm Digital Post & Graphics in 1989. Paulsen has held senior engineering positions at systems integration companies since 1995. Projects and consulting activities include all the major networks, Monday Night Football in HD for ABC Sports, Microsoft, ESPN, CNN, HBO, Turner Broadcast, Discovery, IMF, Al Jazeera, and broadcast group television stations including Sinclair Broadcast, ACME Television, and Nexstar Broadcasting. He was a core technology consultant for CPB’s pre-digital transition studies which identified shared market opportunities for 22-stations in 9-markets for PBS (1997).

A current and past contributor to the NAB Engineering HandbookPaulsen has published industry-related and award-winning technical articles for SMPTE’s Motion Imaging Journal. For over 25 years, his continuing TV technology series Media Servers and Storage Technologies and Cloudspotter’s Journal have yielded over 250 articles on the state and future of media technologies for the digital age. Paulsen has authored three books: Moving Media Storage Technologies and Video and Media Servers: Applications and Technology (first and second editions).
